Common Name:  Sedge Sprite

Latin Name:  Nehalennia irene (Hagen, 1861)
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Length: 24 - 30 mm

Range: Alberta

Habitat:  Ponds with sedges

Time of year seen:  June to August (Additional Sightings)

Diet: Insects

Other: The Sedge Sprite is Alberta's smallest Damselfly.  Male Sedge Sprites are a bright metallic green with light blue tipped abdomens and no post-ocular spots.  Females come in two color morphs:  green with yellow and metallic green with blue markings.  These damselflies are weak fliers, typically found in thickly vegetated areas around ponds with grass and sedges.  (Acorn, 2004 & Cannings, 2002)
