Purple-lined Sallow Moth

Common Name:  Purple-lined Sallow Moth

Latin Name:  Pyrrhia exprimens Walker, 1857
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Wingspan:  33 - 37 mm

Range: Southern Alberta

Habitat: Various

Time of year seen: May to August

Caterpillar's Diet:  Balsam poplar, trembling aspen, willow, rose, plum and others 

Other: The Purple-lined Sallow Moth is a wide spread species found across southern Canada.  The adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light.  There is a single brood per year. The larva are generalists and feed on a wide range of hosts.  They have a preference for the flowers and fruit of  the host plant.  (Hardwick, 1970)
