Common Name:  Water Scavenger Beetle

Latin Name: Tropisternus lateralis marginatus Motschulsky
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Length:  8 - 9.5 mm  

Range:  Southern Alberta

Habitat: Stagnant lowland ponds to cold, clear montane lakes

Time of year seen:  Summer

Diet: Organic debris

Other: One of three sub-species separated by the shape of the yellowish markings on their elytra.  T. lateralis marginatus is a good swimmer that is found in a variety of aquatic habitats ranging from stagnant lowland ponds to cold, clear montane lakes. (Smetana, 1988)
