Great Ash Sphinx

Common Name:  Great Ash Sphinx, Northern Ash Sphinx

Latin Name:  Sphinx chersis (Hübner, 1823)
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Hodges Number: 7802

Wing span:  90 - 130 mm

Range: Alberta

Habitat:  Woodlands and forests

Time of year seen: May to October  (Additional Sightings)

Caterpillars Diet: Ash, Quaking Aspen, Prunus species,  Lilac & privet

Other:  The Great Ash Sphinx is a wide spread species found across Canada from British Columbia to Nova Scotia.  There is one generation per year. The forewings are ash grey with four thin black dashes on each wing.  The outermost line touches the tip of each wing. The hind wing is black with two diffuse grey bands. (Powell et al,2009 &  Covell, 1984)
