Common Name:  Thread-waisted Wasp

Latin Name:  Podalonia sp.
                        (E. Eaton, det.)

Length:  20-30 mm

Range:  Throughout Alberta

Habitat:  Various

Time of year seen:  Summer

Provision Nest With: Cutworms

Other:  Thread-waisted wasps in the genus Podalonia hunt cutworms.  The wasps dig the cutworms out of the ground, paralyze them with a sting and then drag them to a pre-excavated nest.  Once the cut worm is in the nest the wasp lays an egg on it and seals the entrance.  (Marshall, 2006)
