Common Name:  Box Elder Bug, Maple Bug

Latin Name:  Boisea trivittatus
                        (R. Bercha, det.)

Length:  11 - 14 mm

Range: Prairie areas in Southern Alberta

Habitat: Near Maple Trees

Time of year seen:  Fall

Diet: Manitoba Maple or Box Elder

Other: The Box Elder Bug is a wide spread species that occurs in the southern part of Canada east of the Rocky Mountains. It feeds primarily on Manitoba Maple or Box Elder sap.  Adult Box Elder Bugs are black with bright orange markings.  The Bug over winters as an adult with large numbers congregating in protected hibernation sites.
